A New Tooth Brush for Dyson.
Working on an internal project exploration brief after discovering Dyson had applied for a patent for a flossing tooth brush.

Patents to project
After discovering that Dyson had just applied for a new patent for a device that would floss and brush at the same time, I thought it would be a fun little personal project to explore what I think the device could look like and the type of messaging they might use across the out-of-home marketing materials.
With the aim of continuing to practice my product design skills, and have some fun!
*This project was not briefed by Dyson and was conducted as a personal project.
Explroation and process
Ultimately, with the product features defined from the patent, my focus was to explore and understand Dyson's design semiotics. This process led to the creation of multiple mood boards that dissected their range of new and old projects. Helping me gain a strong understanding of where their brand was, and is heading.
After this, it was time to put pencil to paper, drawing concepts, shapes and bodies of the brush I believe would feel true to Dyson's function-first design ethos. Of course, plenty of bad ideas. Many that didn't feel remotely like a Dyson product.
However, the drawings and concepts started to help my identify areas of the brush that needed to be almost brutalist, emphasising the function. And others parts that should be sleek, and adopt the brushed metallic style.

Less time. Less hassle. Cleaner teeth.
The new Dyson HydroJet electric toothbrush combines advanced cleaning technology and new approaches to brushing teeth, while providing an intuitive, all-in-one experience. The round head is specially designed for a tooth-by-tooth clean, with the hydrojets flossing between your teeth as you brush, to give you the deepest clean.
Also, with Bluetooth connectivity to the Dyson smartphone app to give you real-time feedback on your brushing habits and routines that can be adjusted by your dental professional.
Different to other brushes
- Simple user interface. Simplifying the toothbrush control by having three perfectly tailored brush modes and one flossing mode, all controlled by one button. Press once to cycle through brush modes. Press & hold to floss.
- Cleaner teeth. Integrated flossing jets provide the cleanest brush you’ll ever have. This brush will floss your teeth using a mixture of air and concentrated flavoured water to clean where your brush won’t.
- Precision flossing. The angled hydrojets create a focused point that flushes out bacteria and other debris that gets stuck between your teeth, to further reduce tooth decay.
- Reduced size. Using Nano technology and the insight that people always dock their toothbrushes after the use anyway, means the battery size can be greatly reduced to only have to last 8 minutes (2 days).
- A hygienic toothbrush. The minimal, smooth outer shell offers a surface from which dirt and old toothpaste can be cleaned off with ease.
- Reduced waste. The whole brush head no longer needs to be removed, only the smaller screw-in brush head needs to be removed using the multi-functional packaging, for a clean and easy switch.
- Better looking. Improving how the brush head and body are defined, to create a more beautiful looking toothbrush.
Conclusion
It was fun to work in 3D again, conducting a small and playful personal project. However, it's clear that I've got more work projects to do to truly keep up with a high level of Industrial Designers out there.
