What is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)?
AEO is the practice of structuring your website's content so that AI-powered tollslike ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, and voice assistants, can accurately extract and surface it in response to user queries.
Where traditional SEO targets ranking positions on a results page and gaining authority through crawlers, AEO targets being the direct, authorative answer. The goal is to be the source an AI cites, not just a link a human clicks.
How is AEO different from traditional SEO?
In my opinion, the same traditional SEO strategies still work search engine crawlers as well as agentic crawlers. AEO optimises for comprehension, more specifically, how well an AI model can parse your content, trust your authority, and pull a clean, accurate answer from it.
This means clear question-and-answer structure, authoritative tone, expert profiling and quotes, schema markup, and content that directly addresses the intent behind a query rather than dancing around it.
What does agentic search mean, and why does it matter for my website?
Agentic search refers to AI systems that don't just retrieve links. They nowautonomously browse, reason across multiple sources, and complete tasks on a user's behalf.
Tools like ChatGPT's browsing mode and Perplexity operate this way already. It matters for your website because these agents make decisions about which sources are credible and useful. If your site structure, content depth, and authority signals aren't up to scratch, you get skipped entirely.
Will AEO replace SEO, or do I need both?
Both, now strategies are vital.
Traditional search still drives significant traffic, so abandoning SEO would be a mistake. But it's time to start optimising for AI citations.
The smart approach is a unified strategy: build content that's structurally sound for crawlers, authoritative enough for AI citation, and clear enough for humans to actually read. They're not mutually exclusive — good AEO is the same as good SEO. Content with a sharper focus on intent and good content architecture.
